As part of Latin’s swimming program, Ellen won four consecutive state championships in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle and was part of two champion 400-yard free relay teams. Named All-Conference and All-State all four years, she was also an All-American her freshman and senior years, and named the Charlotte Weekly 2007 Swimmer of the Year.

Ellen is the current Latin record holder in the 500 freestyle (4:58.4 in 2007) and was the record holder in the 200 freestyle (1:52.72 in 2004) until 2018 when broken by Amy Dragelin ’19.  Ellen’s 200 free relay team (Christa Holt ’06, Cecily Shaw ’07, and Anna Steenrod ’04) from 2004 held the Latin record until 2019.

Ellen graduated from Latin and went to Northwestern University, where she was an All-American swimmer and team captain. She set four school records at Northwestern, including breaking two school records in a single swim at the 2009 NCAA championships, and she remains in the top five fastest performers at Northwestern in five events. Ellen also competed in three events at the 2008 Olympic Trials.

As passionate about academics as she was about athletics, Ellen was inducted to Latin’s Cum Laude Society and was named Academic All-Big Ten, a Scholar All-American, and a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar while at Northwestern.

Ellen lives in Madison, Wisconsin, and is proud to be inducted alongside her father, John.
