At Latin, Daniel Jones was a three-year Varsity Football letterman under Coach Larry McNulty. Daniel, who helped the Hawks to two state championship game appearances, was elected a team captain for his junior and senior years. Stellar performances both seasons earned not only championship appearances for Latin, but also the following awards for Daniel:
Varsity Football state champion in 2014 and runner-up in 2013

  • First-team NCISAA All-State: 2014
  • Second-team NCISAA All-State: 2013
  • All-Conference: 2013, 2014
  • South Charlotte Sports Report Quarterback of the Year Award
  • Multi-Sport Performer of the Year: 2015 Hawkspy Awards
  • Daniel departed Charlotte Latin with the following school records:
    • Total offensive yards (8,344), total passing yards (6,997), single-season total yards (3,727), and single-season passing yards
    • Total touchdowns (98) and single-season passing touchdowns 

Although a stellar football player, Daniel also earned three letters in Boys’ Basketball, serving as a team co-captain during his senior season.

Daniel matriculated to Duke University, where he joined the football team as a walk-on. He went on to have a successful three-year career in Durham, leading the program to back-to-back bowl wins for the first time ever. Daniel currently ranks fifth in all-time passing yards and third in all-time passing touchdowns at Duke.

Daniel was selected sixth overall by the New York Giants in the 2019 NFL draft, the highest a Duke player had been taken in the draft in more than 30 years. Since then, Daniel has set the following records:

    • Most games started
    • Most completions and highest completion percentage
    • Most pass attempts, most passing yards, most passing touchdowns, most pass yards per game, and best passer rating 
    • Most fourth-quarter comebacks and game-winning drives
  • Longest quarterback run
  • First quarterback with 2,500+ passing yards and 400+ rushing yards in a single season; first quarterback with 200 yards passing and 100 yards rushing in a single game
  • Most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season and in a career
     
  • NFL records:
    • Most passing touchdowns in a single game by a rookie quarterback
    • First rookie to have three games with four touchdown passes and no interceptions
    • First player to have 300-plus passing yards, two-plus touchdown passes, and 70-plus rushing yards (including no interceptions) in a postseason playoff game

Daniel is now in his sixth season with the New York Giants. Despite his busy schedule, he continues to visit Latin and stay connected with our football Hawks.
