Chris Canty ’00 surprisingly began his athletic career at Latin, not on the football field, but rather on the basketball court. This eventual NFL star did not join the Varsity football team until his junior year. But when he did, he helped lead the Hawks to the NCISAA State Championship in 1999 and earned All-Conference and All-State honors as a senior tight end and defensive end. At Latin, he recorded 20 receptions for 400 yards, 89 tackles, and seven sacks bringing his prep career stats to: 161 tackles, 12 sacks, and two fumble recoveries. He was also a two-year letterman and all-conference honoree for the basketball team.
Chris earned an athletic scholarship to play football at the University of Virginia. As a Cavalier, he was a two-time second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and led all conference defensive linemen in tackles during his sophomore and junior seasons.
Chris began an 11-year career in the NFL when he was selected in the fourth round (132nd overall pick) of the 2005 draft by the Dallas Cowboys. After starting all 16 games as the Cowboys’ right defensive end three consecutive years, he became a free agent in 2009 and signed with the New York Giants. In 2011, he registered career-high marks in tackles (47) and sacks (4) and started in the Giants win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. Chris concluded his NFL career in 2015 after spending three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.
Chris currently resides in New York City, where he is a host of ESPN Radio’s Canty & Carlin. A member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, he is also the founder of the Chris Canty Foundation which strives to enhance the development of youth in our communities.
