John Grigg ’79 was a multi-sport athlete at CLS. He was a member of four consecutive NCISAA state team tennis titles during the Bev Earle era and won the prestigious individual singles state championships in 1978 and 1979. He won the North Carolina Tennis Junior State Championship in Boys 18 singles and doubles in 1978, and came in #3 in singles and #1 in doubles at the southern region championships (9 states) in 1979. He went on to become captain of the UNC tennis team, which was nationally ranked and the co-ACC regular season champion his senior year. He lost only one singles match in the ACC that year.

At Latin, John was also named to the Charlotte Observer’s All Mecklenburg County basketball team in 1979. He was named to the NCISAA All-State basketball team in 1978 and 1979 and was the leading scorer in the NCISAA in 1979. John also won several track and field events as an adjunct member of the track team including coming in first at the CISAA conference meet in the 100-yard and 220-yard dash events his senior year.

John and his wife Amanda live in Charlotte. He is proud to be inducted alongside his daughter Ellen ’07. John adds that his daughters, Anne ’10 and Julia ’10, were stalwart defenders on the juggernaut CLS soccer team from 2007–10, but their legacies are blemished by their fatuous claims that they could handily beat their father across his cherished 100-yard distance during that era.
