2024 - 2025 Season Summary
By Coach Paige
The varsity wrestling team had an incredible season, highlighted by winning the CISAA Conference Championship and finishing as runners-up in the state tournament, just one point shy of first place. Along the way, we also claimed titles at both the Cary Academy Dual Tournament and the Cardinal Newman Holiday Wrestling Classic. The team posted an outstanding dual meet record of 23-2, showcasing our depth and determination. Individually, we crowned four NCISAA state champions and had 11 state placers, demonstrating the talent and hard work of our athletes. Most notably, for the first time since 2015, we had a National Prep All-American in Spear Gorelick, capping off a truly historic and successful season.

2023 - 2024 Season Summary
By Coach David Paige
“The only way out is through, and the only good way through is together.” Robert Frost
This quote became the mantra of the 2023-24 Latin wrestling team. This year’s squad used the benefit of having a well-balanced team to amass a dual meet record of 29-1, including 1st place championships at the Westminster Duals in Atlanta, and the Blue and Gold Duals in Cary, NC. Latin wrestling’s only dual meet loss was to 3A NC Dual State Champions Eastern Guilford. In the post season, the Hawks bested the CISAA field winning six individual titles at the conference championship meet, claiming three individual NCISAA state titles, and bringing home the school’s 25th state wrestling championship – the most of any CLS Athletics program.

HISTORY
2022 - 2023 Season Summary
The 2023 wrestling team had a great season returning our program to the top of NCISAA wrestling. We started the year off strong going 5-0, winning the Cary Academy Duals. We traveled to Baltimore, MD going 2-2 at the Gilman Duals. We hosted 9 other independent schools from North and South Carolina at our inaugural Carolina Prep Duals. And most importantly, we finished the season strong winning both our conference and state tournaments in dominant form.  Our team finished with a 26-4 dual meet record, and pushed our 8-year record against NC independent schools to 71-1. Click here to read about the CISAA Conference Wrestling Championship and click here to read about the NCISAA State Wrestling Championship.

2021 - 2022 Season Summary
The varsity wrestling team finished second in both the CISAA Conference Championship and the NCISAA State Championship this year. Four individuals won their weight class in the CISAA Championship, and a lot of newcomers to the starting lineup showed promise for the future. (Read more about the wrestling conference championship results here.)

Although the Latin wrestling team's streak of state titles came to an end, this year's runner-up team performance was no less impressive considering the fact that most of the wrestlers were new to the starting lineup. With the departure of 11 starters from last year's team, most people did not expect much from the Mat Hawks in 2022. But like all the teams before them, Latin Wrestling was able to rise to the occasion and place 11 individuals in the state tournament. 2020 - 2021 Season Summary
Coach Paige did not think we were going to have a season this year. Even after we began regular practices, he was not convinced we were going to be able to compete. The night before our first match, the school moved to red and all athletics were put on hold. Things were not looking good, but we returned to school and training after a couple of weeks, we rescheduled the matches we'd missed, and finally, on January 27th, we hit the mat. The Hawks were 4-0 in the CISAA, and 6-0 overall, continuing a 60-0 streak in state dual meets.
The season ended with our tenth consecutive NCISAA Championship on February 27th. Latin had a competitor in all 14 weight classes, and every single one scored points. Led by a strong and experienced senior class, the Mat Hawks put up 203 points with impressive depth. Dean Omirly won his third NCISAA title, claiming victory in the 220 lb division in decisive fashion with a :35 fall. Four other Hawks made it to the final round and finished as state runners-up: Freshman Ethan Randall (106), senior Marshall Hanson (132), senior Sam House (170), and senior Andrew Cowan (195). Finishing in third were senior Cole Lavelle (138), senior Jake Mermans (145), junior Dave Mosrie (152), and senior Bruno Lahass (285). Three Hawks finished in fourth: freshman Alex Kim (120), junior Thomas Hullinger (160), and sophomore James Van Nort (182). Senior Buchanan Perrigo was fifth (126) and sophomore Vivek Rao was sixth (113).
An outstanding senior class led the way all year, and Dean Omirly capped off his Latin wrestling career with a 3rd NCISAA individual title and an overall record of 111-8. This was a memorable season for many reasons, but it was made truly special by this group of hardworking, dedicated wrestlers.
