2024 Season Summary
By Coach Cook
Challenge and opportunity were the running themes of the 2024 season. With only 3 returning players, there were quite a few unknowns this fall. The girls gutted out some good wins in tense spots and showed growth against a couple of our tougher opponents. Maya Borkowski, Maya Rao, and Kylie Wilson provided good, consistent play on the court and the daily leadership to foster a great team environment for all of the new players. Sophia Roberts stepped in to take on the best from other teams. The rest of the girls all contributed throughout the season. Truly a great group of girls. They worked at getting better everyday on the court. More importantly, they came together off the court making the season a ton of fun.  Â
2023Â Season Summary
The 2023 season's motto was "unfinished business." The year prior we had lost in the championship to a very talented opponent but we were confident that this season we would have the opportunity to finish on top. This confidence was rooted in a very experienced roster which consisted of ten returning players as well as five new members. It was clear from the very beginning that our athletes had worked hard to continue to improve and were motivated to compete at a high level. Our team completed an undefeated season with the closest match score being 6-3. It is fair to say that the business was finished! More important though than the success on the court, our team grew close and supported one another on and off the court. We wish our twelve eighth graders the best of luck with their next chapter as they prepare to transition to Upper School tennis and we are excited to see our three returning seventh graders make major competitive contributions next year!
2022Â Season Summary
Our team had an amazing season this fall! The players' hard work resulted in a regular season record of 9-1 and in the postseason we made it to the championship match. All eleven players contributed to our success throughout the season. Establishing the foundation of our team's culture was the main priority accomplished this season. Being mindful of our effort and attitude on and off the court was central to this culture. At the end of each practice and match we dedicated time to spotlight one another for specific examples of maximum effort and maintaining a positive attitude. Every player did a great job of creating an accepting and supportive environment which allowed for our team to grow very close. At times celebrating teammates’ accomplishments and also comforting teammates after defeats. Our team is excited for the opportunities that next season will bring!
2021 Season Summary
Our girls' Middle School tennis team finished strong by winning our playoff tournament after a tough season, including dealing with injuries and some illness. Kudos to Naomi Randall, who battled through most of the season with a broken wrist and turned an obstacle into an opportunity by developing a one-handed backhand slice. She continued to practice and play matches with determination and helped lead the team throughout the season.
We could not have managed without the four sixth graders who worked so hard and made the entire team sharper. Their experience in competition was a huge bonus for us and all of them tasted the thrill of winning whether they played singles or doubles. Ivy Brown and Vivian Randall took turns playing number two singles and both had great records against formidable opponents. Reynolds Burns was very solid in singles and pulled out some amazing doubles wins, pairing up with Naomi. Ella Hennessy was also a huge asset to the team, and the Hawks are fortunate these four girls will be returning next year.
All of the Middle School players showed improvement at the end of the season and we are looking forward to building on what we've started this year.
2020 Season Summary
From Coach Thompson: "Preseason reports had our MS girls' tennis season pegged as a rebuilding year. Our girls, however, proved everyone wrong. With a reduced season of 6 matches, our team missed having a 500 season by one point in spite of paying eventual conference champ Charlotte Country Day twice! Every girl on our team was able to compete in match play and each contributed substantially to our overall performance. These included Naomi Randall, Margaret Cotchett, Juliette De Mey, Parker Lesley, Molly Schnyder, Ananya Banjeree, Sloane Hobart, Mollie Snyder and Maeve Upton. Highlighting the season was Naomi Randall's record at #1 singles of 5 -1 ... a prodigious accomplishment for a 7th grader. With 3 returning players and a solid group of 6th graders coming up, next year's team prospects look great indeed!"
