2024 Season Summary
By Coach Imwalle
This season the Hawks gained valuable experience and became very close teammates over the course of the fall. The future is really bright for this team in the coming years. Many of the returning players are underclassmen who are determined to continue to improve and are eager for another opportunity to compete alongside one another. That said, the leadership from the upperclassmen this season helped lay the foundation for this group going forward. Our captains helped foster an environment that encouraged improvement on and off the court. Our leaders wanted all members of this team to feel accepted and like they truly belonged to this group. This was made possible in large part because of the efforts made by students from different grade levels to build relationships with one another.
2023Â Season Summary
The Girls' Varsity Tennis team had a very competitive season this fall, despite very tough competition and losing 6 players (and 3 starters) from last year's team. Moné Cary, Kate Hampton Haynie, Naomi Randall, and Payton Desai handled most of the heavy lifting at the top four positions, and got solid play at the lower half by Lauren McRae, Katherine Dubose, and Maddie Larsh. Newcomers Ansley Hoffman, Neesa Phadke, Molly Schnyder, Elyse Glassner, and Maggie Adams improved greatly by season's end and supplied great spirit and backup support to their teammates. The Hawks finished tied for 3rd with Charlotte Christian in the CISAA Conference, and finished the regular season 7-8. This earned them the 4th seed in the NCISAA State Tournament, where they lost a close contest to 5th seeded Charlotte Christian. Moné Cary earned All-State honors and was named 1st Team All-Conference, while Naomi Randall and Kate Hampton Haynie each earned spots on the All-Conference Second Team.
2022Â Season Summary
After a challenging start, this year's Varsity Girls' Tennis team really pulled together and hit their stride mid-season, when the singles lineup solidified, and doubles partnerships started to gel. Heading into the NCISAA playoffs, we knew we were better than our 6th seed indicated, but needed to go on the road to prove it. After a home win over Rabun Gap, the Hawks traveled to Raleigh and played their best tennis against third-seeded Saint Mary’s School, and second-seeded Durham Academy, to earn a fourth consecutive spot in the finals. The championship match was against #1 seed Charlotte Country Day and was hosted at UNC Charlotte's Halton-Wagner Tennis Center. The Hawks fought hard but trailed 2-1 going into singles, and could not make up enough ground to get the four wins needed to claim the state title. Calvin Davis, the Bucs' head coach, said that Latin pushed them the hardest this season. It was a fantastic match all around, with everyone giving it their all. (Click here to read more about the Hawks' runner-up finish in the NCISAA.) We would like to recognize the contributions of our five seniors: Mayes Fisher, Eleanor Poole, Samantha DeWeese, Camille Darwich, and Macy Thigpen. Since starting in our program in seventh grade, this group has been a huge part of a string of Latin tennis victories from 2017-2022 that includes two middle school conference championships, three consecutive NCISAA state championships, and this year's runner-up prize. They will be missed!Â
2021 Season Summary
This was a very satisfying season for the team and a great finish. Having lost four seniors from last year's team, it was time to see what this new group would be able to do. With a very deep team and strong chemistry, we competed well in singles and figured out who would play doubles together. The chemistry of the group was excellent, meaning that the girls were confident and relaxed, even in the toughest matches. A highlight of the regular season was beating CCDS on their home courts after losing to them at Latin earlier in the season. We achieved our performance goals of winning the CISAA conference and the NCISAA State Championship by working hard on the daily goals of strong effort, improvement each day, and believing and supporting each other!
2020 Season Summary
The girls' tennis team secured its second consecutive NCISAA 4A Championship on October 31, 2020, defeating Providence Day 5-2 in the final match. Last year's win was a tense, come-from-behind, down-to-the-wire victory, and although this year's match wasn't as dramatic, it was no less emotional.
On a chilly morning at the still-new Charlotte Latin Tennis Center, doubles duo Chloe Floyd and Nina Lavelle were the first to notch a win for the Hawks, defeating Michelle Yang and Natasha Singh 8-2. Senior Kate Coppage and freshman Moné Cary followed suit, earning an 8-3 win over Molly Kerrigan and Brandon Ackermann. On court 3, Annabel Chen and Mayes Fisher got off to a rocky start, but battled back from a 1-4 deficit to take the match into a tiebreaker. Although it ultimately ended in a Chargers' win, Annabel and Mayes showed toughness and determination throughout the match and were cheered on each point by their teammates.
According to NCISAA playoff rules, the first team to secure five team points wins the match. With a 2-1 lead, the Hawks moved into singles play, needing just three more points to win. Kate Coppage, Nina Lavelle, Chloe Floyd, Moné Cary, Samantha DeWeese, and Mayes Fisher represented the Hawks on courts 1-6, respectively. Chloe was the first to secure a point for the team, with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Just a few minutes later, Nina won her match 6-1, 6-1, to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead. Providence Day's Michelle Yang secured a point for her team with a win over Kate Coppage, bringing the score to 4-2 in favor of the Hawks. Moné, Samantha, and Mayes each won their first set, so things were looking promising. In the second set, however, Mayes struggled and fell behind, ultimately losing the set 1-6 and forcing her into a tiebreak with PD's McKenzie Rose Eason. As Moné and Sam worked to secure their second sets, Mayes once again had to test her mental toughness by focusing on one point at a time. Ultimately, her singles tiebreak win was the point that secured the state title for the Hawks.
In a season that began with cancellations and postponements due to weather and COVID complications, Coach Dale Hall expressed an appreciation for the opportunity just to compete, and pride in her team for their resilience and positive attitude throughout. The Hawks finished the 2020 season with a record of 10-1, a second consecutive NCISAA 4A title, and most importantly, memories to last a lifetime.
