Charlotte Latin MS Boys Tennis
2026 Season
Season officially begins February 9
2025 Season Summary
By Coach Cook
It was quite a spring! Our Middle School Boys’ Tennis team finished 12-3. The boys came together and competed hard for one another, while keeping things fun and upbeat. With a nice mix of returning players and guys new to the program, we were blessed with quite a bit of depth this season. Anchored at the top of the lineup by Bradley Shaw, Mason Orlousky, and Carsten Seeburg, the boys were able to absorb the opponents' best with only a couple of blemishes along the way. Those three players showed leadership which extended beyond their on-court talent, providing a great environment for the rest of the team to grow. Everyone played and contributed to match wins throughout the season. Each of our three losses were close matches – coming down to the last doubles match on the court. It was a different line each time, so six different players got to experience the fun and tension that comes in that situation. With the talent and character of these young men, the tennis program will be in good hands in the upcoming years.
2024 Season Summary
By Coach Cook
Spring 2024 proved to be a great season for Middle School Boys’ Tennis. A fun group of eighth graders provided good play, experience, and leadership. Our four seventh graders, while new to the team, were ready to contribute early and blended well with the returning players. The boys hit the ground running, only losing a couple of lines over the first several matches. That gave us the chance to develop and take advantage of the depth within the team. As the competition raised its level of play, the team responded well. Most of the boys were able to compete in tight matches that were pivotal in turning the score in Latin's favor. The best example: two players gutted out a line of doubles to win the Country Day match 5-4. It came down to a tiebreaker with both teams lining the court watching. Tons of fun! Overall, the team finished 10-3 which placed them second in conference play. Going forward, the boys moving up in the program should be ready while the guys returning are well-positioned to lead the next group.
2023 Season Summary
This season will be remembered as a success for a variety of reasons. First, all thirteen players on our team gained experience from competing in both singles and doubles throughout the season. Everyone on our team contributed directly to winning a match this year! With only four returning players, most of our athletes had never competed with one another. This season was a success because our team's culture promoted a transition from being classmates to becoming teammates and friends off the court. An added bonus, and a final reason that this season will be remembered as a success, is because we had an 11-1 record and we won the Conference Championship! Good luck to our eighth graders as they move on to the Upper School and I'm excited to see this talented seventh grade group compete again next year!
2022 Season Summary
In middle school boys' tennis, our team finished strong especially since we only had three really experienced players and only nine players on the roster. We had a 2-7 record in the regular season. Unfortunately we had four rainouts, as well as injured and ill players that really made a difference in at least two key matches. We lost to Covenant Day twice in the season but very narrowly the second time. Our boys were hopeful they would get one more shot at them, and we ended up playing them again in the finals after defeating Country Day in the semifinals. Our team turned on the afterburners with some impressive wins. Our final score against Covenant Day was 8-2! Winning our section of the draw in the playoff tournament brought our record to 4-9. Team awards were given to Clayton Hahn (Most Improved), Charlie Stubbs (Leadership & Sportsmanship), and Wilson Zhang (MVP for winning 17 or his 21 matches). I thoroughly enjoyed coaching this great group of guys!
2021 Season Summary
This season's middle school tennis proved to be a building year for the boys. However, the Hawks still had a number of good performances. Charlie Stubbs and David Tian paired well at #1 doubles and won most of their matches. David Tian also recorded the highest number of wins at #2 singles. In his first year of team tennis, Merritt Backerman proved highly effective at #3 singles. In fact, all the boys were extremely competitive in a year where the competition was as strong or better than in seasons past. With 3 returning players for next year, the future of the team looks promising indeed!
2020 Season Summary
The spring athletic season came to an abrupt end on Thursday, March 12, 2020, when the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association announced that all athletics events were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The impact of that decision on our spring student-athletes was top of mind for all involved and the athletic department, coaches, booster club, and parents worked together to keep our Hawks engaged and connected. Our Latin athletes ended their seasons in an unprecedented and unexpected way, but with a renewed appreciation for their sport, their teammates, and the many benefits of participating in Charlotte Latin Athletics.
