2024 Season Summary
By Coach Imwalle
Throughout this season, the Varsity Boys’ Tennis Team embraced and overcame several challenges. Many of our top players entered the year with limited varsity experience but rose to the occasion and competed at a high level. Highlights of this year included seeing close friendships develop amongst teammates and team-wide commitment to improvement both on and off the court. Andrew Chen played a large role in the success of our team and for his efforts he was named First Team All-Conference and First Team All-State for the second year in row.

2023 Season Summary
This year’s boys’ varsity team finished strong, surpassing its fifth seed in the NCISAA state tournament with an upset over Cannon in the quarterfinals to reach the state semifinals. Challenges were everywhere this season, including home/aways with several extremely strong teams in our own conference, in the East, and the early season loss of senior and Hampden-Sydney commit Thomas Davis to injury. It was next-man-up with Andrew Chen, Emilio Llerenas, Hayden Willett, and freshman Luca Bravo leading the way. Senior Charles De Mey and sophomore Chanakya Ayinala added a spark once the team was back at full strength for the playoffs. This team showed grit and perseverance and their efforts paid off.

2022 Season Summary
The boys' varsity tennis team had a very competitive season, despite very tough competition and losing 6 players (5 starters) from last year's team. Thomas Davis, Emilio Lllerenas Soto, and freshman Andrew Chen handled most of the heavy lifting at the top 3 positions, and we got solid play at the lower half by Hayden Willett, Christopher O'Leary, and Ryan McDonald. Charles DeMey, Devan Amin, Alex Troni, Carter Babcock, Rohan Nadkarni, and David Tian all contributed to the team's success in matches during the season. The Hawks finished tied for 3rd with Cannon in the CISAA conference, and finished the season 10-10. In their most complete match of the season, the Hawks went toe-to-toe with eventual champions Cary Academy in a 4-hour match before falling to them at Duke Indoor in the quarterfinal round. Andrew Chen was named 1st Team All Conference, while Thomas Davis and Emilio Llerenas Soto each earned spots on the Second Team

2021 Season Summary
We were grateful to have a season! With COVID protocols, we went through twice as many tennis balls and played in masks with plenty of hand sanitizer at the ready! We were led by captains Jackson Morgan, Ethan Li, and Andrew Chang. On the court, the Hawks continued their upward trend, closing the gap against the state's top teams. Latin finished 2nd in the CISAA Conference behind #1 Country Day, making the Bucs earn it with a very competitive 5-4 loss in their second away match after losing the first 6-3. For perspective, we had lost either 9-0 or 8-1 to CCD eight times between 2016-2019. Latin had 2 playoff wins this year against Christ School and Carmel Chrsitian before falling in another very close NCISAA semifinal match at Greensboro Day. Our last loss to them in 2019 was 6-1. Our success this year can be attributed to our depth, led by undefeated All-State and All-Conference #1 Aathreya Mahesh, 2nd Team All-Conference Thomas Davis and Emilio Llerenas, newcomer Luke Coppage, senior Ethan Li, and sophomore Hayden Willett. Christopher O'Leary, and Evan Li also chipped in singles wins during the season. The team also excelled in doubles, often sweeping teams with Mahesh/Davis and Coppage/Llerenas at lines 1 and 2. Seniors Jackson Morgan and Andrew Chang were unstoppable at line 3 doubles, amassing an 11-1 season record, including critical wins against Country Day and Greensboro Day. Most importantly, the team had fun and competed hard.

2020 Season Summary
The spring athletic season came to an abrupt end on Thursday, March 12, 2020, when the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association announced that all athletics events were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The impact of that decision on our spring student-athletes was top of mind for all involved and the athletic department, coaches, booster club, and parents worked together to keep our Hawks engaged and connected. Our Latin athletes ended their seasons in an unprecedented and unexpected way, but with a renewed appreciation for their sport, their teammates, and the many benefits of participating in Charlotte Latin Athletics.
