2024 Season Summary
By Coach Belk
The 2024 JV volleyball season was nothing short of exciting. Through dedication and hard work, the Hawks grew together as a team, demonstrating resilience and determination both on and off the court. This season, the team celebrated key victories against Cannon School, Covenant Day, and Charlotte Christian, finishing with an impressive 9-7 record. The JV Hawks showcased tenacity by achieving many of the goals set at the start of the season. Some of the season’s most memorable highlights include sweeping Charlotte Christian in two sets at home in a redemption match, battling Providence Day in a thrilling three-set match—arguably one of the team’s best performances as a unit—and securing victories against Cannon School both at home and away. The away match at Cannon was particularly special, with the energy and enthusiasm from the crowd creating an unforgettable atmosphere. This season was a testament to the team’s growth, unity, and passion for the game. Go Hawks!
2023Â Season Summary
The JV Volleyball team went 5-9 this season. Some team highlights were our sweep over Providence Day at home, as well as over Charlotte Country Day School at home on senior night. While our record may not have reflected a winning season, every individual grew as a person and a player and were able to improve every day. Notably, junior Sydney Thune was one of our captains this year and was named this season's Most Valuable Player. Ashley Bean is a new student this year at CLS and was also new to volleyball, and was named this season's Most Improved Athlete. Sophie Edwards, also a freshman, was an amazing teammate in all aspects and always brought a positive energy to the court and to practice and was given the Positive Player award for this season. I am proud of the way that the team came together every day to compete for each other and represent Charlotte Latin in the best way possible.
2022Â Season Summary
Thirteen ninth and tenth grade Hawks made up the JV volleyball team, which was led by second-year coach Lisa Laws and assisted by Marianna Spero. The Hawks celebrated key wins against Providence Day, Carmel Christian, and Charlotte Country Day, while learning from their losses and taking action to correct mistakes. It was a great year for this team, which is full of talent and positivity.Â
2021 Season Summary
2021...what an amazing season our JV volleyball team had this year! In my first season with CLS volleyball, I loved seeing the players' desire to get better and the growth they experienced. Captained by Sophia and Emily, our team of mostly freshmen was inspired to work hard each day and trust each other on and off the court! Volleyball is truly a team sport, and we could not have had better leaders! In the middle, we had our two powerful, extremely versatile players: Camille and Emily. They both are such hard workers and adjusted to any and every request I made. Our setters Annie and Talia were true quarterbacks of the team, who dealt with the pressure of making game-time decisions so confidently! Mari, Sydney, Madison, Holdyn, Maddie, Rheaa, and Zoe made huge progress in hitting and ball handling! Our program will be built on these foundational skills! You are setting the tone for the future! Lastly, a major shoutout to our Libero, Hannah! Some of the most exciting digs and consistent serve receive came from your efforts! Hawks, we are on our way to winning those tight matches and being a major player in our conference! I will miss laughing with each of you every day during our pre-practice chats. The word of the season is PROUD!
2020 Season Summary
From Coach Johnson: "What a fun and enjoyable season we've had this year!! After two months together, they bonded as friends and teammates and grew immensely in communication and technical skills. Huge shout out to my lovely captains Sophia and Serena - you are both impactful leaders who inspire others to follow in your footsteps. You're both stars with killer serves and nonstop energy. In the middle, we had our three powerful gentle giants: Katie, Maddie, & Emily. You three are game-changers and always show up to play your best. I have loved seeing your growth in serving, hitting, and consistency. We can't forget the duo that led our team as the heart and soul of spirit: Emy & Joy. You both never fail to make me laugh and your hard work is what keeps us coaches doing what we do! Shout out to my fierce and focused sophomore, Nyela. You always show up when the team needs you and come in clutch during tough situations. To my wonderful helper, Anna, you brighten my day with your positive energy and I've loved watching you become a more confident and fearless "you". To my whole team, THANK YOU for always showing up, making me feel so welcome, and always doing your best. We are on our way to greatness and I will miss seeing your shining faces each day. AH HAWKS!"
