2024 Season Summary
By Coach Frederick
The 2024 JV Field Hockey team navigated uncharted territory by opting to create a full team with the help of our 8th grade players. Working under the motto of "Together I'll Play Better," the small core of Upper Schoolers and the cadre of Middle Schoolers gelled quickly and won their first game with a resounding 5-0 score over Covenant Day. The Hawks faced very few other school teams which allowed the participation of Middle Schoolers, so the evenness of the season's record speaks well to the willingness of our team to truly "play up" against older and more experienced JV teams. Some of the team's best moments this season came from games whose final score was 0-0: a tie against a strong and feisty Providence Day team and a tie that felt equivalent to winning the Super Bowl against Country Day. Overall, the team grew in both experience and skills, and next season already looks bright for this crew!

2023 Season Summary
The JV Field Hockey team persevered through a challenging early season this year to come out with an even 7-7-2 record. The team opened the season well at the Queens University play day in August and finished with a very strong showing at the Julie Firr Memorial Tournament in October, taking 4th place. The team was led by junior captains Sydney Query and Kate Livingston, who did an excellent job of guiding their peers through practices affected by the extreme heat of mid-August and challenging games against varsity teams. Notable performances for the season included the change of position for both Sydney Query and Kira Rice, moving from defense to midfield. Alara Lowe and Abbey Hanna moved to the forward line from defense and made significant contributions on both ends of the field. Paige Fletcher, Addison Salvage, and Ella Tarumianz provided offensive firepower and forward momentum in many games with their lightning speed. With the help of a return to regular practices and a steady flow of games by mid-September, as well as the addition of technical practices led by Coach Diego, the team played their best game of the season in early October, challenging Country Day in a match that could have gone either way, but ultimately saw the Hawks lose 1-0 on a late goal from the Bucs; this was a huge improvement over the 5-0 loss at Country Day from earlier in the season. In the end, everyone played hard and worked on developing their individual skills, as well as learned how to be a supportive teammate. All of these are fundamental skills for future success, both on and off the field hockey field. Way to go, Hawks!

2022 Season Summary
Fall 2022 saw another strong JV Field Hockey team work hard in practice and dominate their competition. Game highlights of the season included a thrilling 1-1 tie against Myers Park HS in which the Hawks were tied 0-0 at the half, got scored on in the third quarter, and then managed a tying goal in the last 90 seconds of regulation. Paige Fletcher scored the game winner! A second highlight was a 1-0 win over Country Day off a corner play with no time left on the clock in the fourth quarter. Charlotte Tune scored the game winner! Throughout the season the team worked to support each other as players and as people, utilizing the double shoulder squeeze that has become the physical representation of our team motto: "I've got your back and I know you've got mine." The mutual support provided to and by each and every player on the team helped produce stalwart defense and a potent offense; the Hawks outscored their opponents 83-8 en route to a 14-1-1 regular season record, a 4-0 Queens play day record in August, and a 4-1 Julie Firr Memorial Tournament record to conclude the season, finishing as runner-up to Myers Park in the championship game.

2021 Season Summary
The 2021 JV Field Hockey team produced a season to remember: twenty-three dedicated and skilled field hockey players showed up to each practice and each game ready to work hard and have fun. Led by junior captains Kate Jones and Biz Neely, the team's success was the product of their willingness to focus not just on the "me" aspect of personal skill development, but rather the "we" aspect of team development. Captured by the group's use of double shoulder squeezes before every practice and every game to represent our "team first" attitude, the girls dedicated their efforts to making themselves better players by helping their teammates become better players. The attitude and character of this year's squad are what contributed most to the team's successful season: an undefeated 18-0 record, outscoring their opponents 91-4. Even in goal scoring, the effort was distributed across the team. Four different players scored double-digit goals for the year, 12 of 23 players scored at least one goal, and 10 players added at least one assist. This season will be a foundation for many seasons to come!
