This was a great year for the Middle School Swim Team! The team battled their way through various setbacks including illnesses, injuries and inclement weather that postponed our championships, and did so with grit and determination. The girls’ team had an impressive record of 11-1 and finished 2nd at the GCMSAA Invitational. Eighth grader Erin Greathouse was Conference Champion and set new records in the 50 freestyle (25.39) and in the 50 backstroke (28.74). The boys’ team had a slow start with a record of 3-11 but showed huge improvement throughout the season, finishing third in the GCMSAA Invitational and defeating two of the teams that beat them earlier in the season. Harrison Smith was Conference Champion in the 100 IM (59.87) and the 50 backstroke (28.22). The girls’ medley relay (Erin Greathouse, Sofia Heaton, Chloe Chen and Devon Celli) also finished first, beating a fast team from Country Day who had been seeded higher than them. 2023 - 2024 Season Summary
By Coach Laura Thomsen
The middle school swim team enjoyed another outstanding season this year! We had ten boys and ten girls competing, and an additional twelve sixth graders joined them for training. The support and camaraderie we saw at every practice and every meet was exemplary, and they even enjoyed getting to know our varsity swimmers through fun games and relay races at the end of practices. The girls’ record was 12-1, with their only loss being to Holy Trinity. The boys were 9-3-1, losing to Holy Trinity once, Cannon twice, and tying CCDS before beating them later in the season. At the Conference Invitational, the girls were 2nd and the boys were 3rd, and our combined scores put the Hawks in 2nd place overall. In addition, we had fourteen top-three finishers and three broken records. David Sammons broke his own record from last year in the 200 freestyle and also set a record in the 50 butterfly. He still owns the record in the 50 backstroke from last season. Erin Greathouse broke the girls’ record in the 50 backstroke. Congratulations to all of our swimmers on a great season!

2021 - 2022 Season Summary
By Coach Laura Thomsen
This was an outstanding year for Middle School swimming! The team consisted of a great mix of very experienced swimmers, complete beginners, and everything in between. Watching them encourage and learn from each other was a joy for the coaches. They faced their fair share of adversity, battling back from injuries and illnesses, always with a positive attitude and a willingness to do whatever was best for the team. The boys' record was 9-1, and they only lost to a very strong team from Holy Trinity, who they almost caught at the GCMSAA Championship meet, where they landed in 2nd place. The girls were 7-3, and had a strong 3rd place finish at the GCMSAA Championship meet. Eighth grader Harrison Short broke the league record in the 100 IM (set by Class of 2021 Hawk Andy Dorsel in 2017) and in the 50 backstroke (a record that had been set in 2016). The boys' freestyle relay, consisting of Harrison, Thomas Hamilton, Albert Monk and Thomas Greathouse, also broke the league record with a time of 1:39.93. Seventh-grader Thomas Greathouse was also the conference champion in the 200 freestyle and 50 butterfly. Congratulations to all of our swimmers on a great season marked by hard work and improvement. Your coaches are very proud of you!
2020 - 2021 Season Summary
By Coach Laura Thomsen
This was an amazing season for the middle school swim team! Despite the challenges and uncertainties of competing during the pandemic, our swimmers rose above any inconveniences and made the best of the time we had together. They acted responsibly at practice and away from the pool, followed all COVID protocols, and proved themselves to be both resilient and flexible. Change was the norm this year; people had to swim events they were not used to swimming, entries were often adjusted at the last minute, meets were cancelled or postponed, but they rose to every challenge, and did so with smiles on their faces. They trained hard, honed their skills, and experienced large drops in times. The boys beat Cannon, Charlotte Christian and Covenant Day handily, and the girls beat Cannon and Covenant Day, coming up short against Charlotte Christian only because we were missing most of our team. There is no doubt in the coaches' minds that both the boys and girls teams would have won the GCMSAA Conference Championships had they not been cancelled. Congratulations to all, and thank you for a fun season!
