2026 Season
Season officially begins February 9
2025 Season Summary
By Coach Ivey
This was a year of growth and challenge for Boys’ MS Lacrosse. Nearly every position had experienced significant turnover, so we had some initial difficulty finding our footing and identity. Once the season progressed, it became far easier for us to assess our relative strengths and weaknesses and make adjustments. There were especially promising runs of play in several games and all the coaches would agree that there were many encouraging signs for the future. We were particularly impressed by the development of many players who were relatively new to the game, and flashes of creativity and incisiveness on offense that hinted at a lot of untapped potential. Defensively, especially later in the season, we proved that we could shut down opponents whose offensive firepower was considerable. In transition, we saw some brave and marauding runs by poles. Offensively, after some coaxing, we started to move off-ball in ways that unlocked the opposition’s defense and changed the run of play with some quality looks. As the players grow in their familiarity with the game, the margins between intent and execution will shrink, and we look forward to even more breakthroughs in 2026.
2024 Season Summary
By Coach Ivey
This was a challenging and exciting season for the Middle School Boys’ Lacrosse Team, with plenty of dramatic comeback efforts and shifting momentum throughout our games. We knew during the preseason that we would be working on small margins for error in what looked to be a very competitive and wide-open conference, and our suspicions were confirmed once we began to play games. From the beginning of the season to the end, we saw a number of relatively new players emerge to become important contributors and show that they were deserving of elevated playing time. While our record wasn’t what we hoped it would be, success at the Middle School level should not and cannot be judged solely on wins and losses. Our goal, to borrow a phrase from one of the coaches, was “not to prepare the road for our players but to prepare our players for the road” – which we tried to do in each practice and game. We showed lots of resilience and fight when things weren’t going our way, and we usually responded to adversity by continuing to press and grind. This kept us in games, and we made opponents work awfully hard if they wanted to come out on top.
2023 Season Summary
The Hawks wrapped up the 2023 season with a 4-6 record. While our record was not what we'd hoped for, the Hawks played hard in each contest and were very competitive throughout. This season was expected to be a rebuilding year after conference title-winning campaigns in 2021 and 2022, and a large number of young players were asked to step-up and contribute from the first day of practice. Many veteran players were tasked with taking on new roles to help the team and did so admirably. We're looking forward to seeing what our departing 8th graders can do at the JV and varsity level next season.
2022 Season Summary
The Hawks concluded the 2022 season with a 7-4 record, including thrilling back-to-back one-goal victories over #1 seed Charlotte Country Day School (7 - 6) and #2 seed Providence Day School (10 - 9) on their way to winning the postseason conference tournament. The expectations for this group were high, as they were the returning conference champions. While there were a number of challenges and some difficult stretches along the way, they continued to press on and ultimately ended the campaign playing their best lacrosse. Charlotte Latin is laying the groundwork for some very competitive seasons at the Upper School level, and as coaches we're looking forward to seeing what the future holds for these players.
2021 Season Summary
The Hawks finished with a combined record of 13-1, suffering our only defeat in a 4 - 5 thriller with Providence Day School. We outscored our opponents 114 - 47 over the course of the season, and no team scored more than 6 goals against us in any single game. We averaged 8.14 goals per game, while holding opponents to an average of 3.35 goals. As the coaches talked after our first practice, we all agreed that there were signs that we might have an exceptional group on our hands. Our focus was on creating a team culture that placed an emphasis on players taking ownership over their efforts, and on seeking consistent, incremental improvements in their lacrosse game each week. It's our sincere hope that all of our players will make the decision to stick with the game of lacrosse as they look ahead to 8th grade or the Upper School. There's a chance for this group of players to be part of something special as they continue to learn, improve, and build team chemistry.
2020 Season Summary
The spring athletic season came to an abrupt end on Thursday, March 12, 2020, when the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association announced that all athletics events were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The impact of that decision on our spring student-athletes was top of mind for all involved and the athletic department, coaches, booster club, and parents worked together to keep our Hawks engaged and connected. Our Latin athletes ended their seasons in an unprecedented and unexpected way, but with a renewed appreciation for their sport, their teammates, and the many benefits of participating in Charlotte Latin Athletics.
