CHEER – VARSITY
By Coach Atwell
The 2024 Fall Cheerleading season was incredibly exciting for these spirited Charlotte Latin Hawks! With 22 cheerleaders (the largest Fall squad in recent history) the team soared to new heights, cheering our Hawks to an impressive 8-0 start. For the first time ever, these dedicated athletes cheered at every home and away game, including memorable road trips to Ravenscroft, Mitchell, and Christ School. Another highlight was storming the field with classmates after a last second field goal to win against Charlotte Country Day.
This team made significant strides in other areas. They dedicated countless hours to strength training, improving their physical fitness and overall performance. Their elite stunting skills were on full display throughout the season, particularly in their performance at the Homecoming Pep Rally. They also participated in school-wide events including the Touchdown Tailgate and Admissions Open House. The Junior Hawks Night was a huge success, welcoming nearly 40 Lower School girls to the track to cheer and stunt, fostering a love for the sport among our youngest students.
A special shout-out to our 10 incredible senior leaders who left an indelible mark on the program. They set high expectations for the season and their exceptional leadership, work ethic, and positive attitude were instrumental in the team's success. Their insistence on continuing traditions such as daily shout-outs, themed practices, pre-game team meals, senior celebrations and running the flags made all the difference in team cohesion this season. As we reflect on this amazing season, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our supportive parents and passionate fans. Their unwavering belief in our team fueled our success. We look forward to building on this momentum and reaching even greater heights in the winter season.
CHEER – MS
By Coach Chapman
Latin Middle School cheerleaders had an exciting football season to cheer for! With a team of 10 girls, made up of three 7th graders and seven 6th graders, we were lucky to have so many new girls to not only the cheer program, but also to Charlotte Latin. Our 7th graders were great leaders in teaching cheers, sidelines, stunts and fight song, and the energy the cheerleaders brought to each football game was contagious! A few highlights for the team was making locker signs during practice for each athlete participating in fall sports for a big game throughout the season and getting to perform at Touchdown Tailgate with the Varsity cheerleaders and dance team. Coaches Chapman & Kerr are so proud of all that these girls accomplished through teamwork this season and how they embodied what Latin school spirit was all about!
CROSS COUNTRY – VARSITY
By Coach Weiss
The 2024 cross country season was one of the most successful in the history of the sport at Latin. The varsity girls concluded their season with a thrilling performance at the NCISAA State Championship meet, earning State Runners-Up honors. The varsity boys captured the CISAA Championship in a tense battle with Providence Day, and followed that up with an excellent fourth place finish at the state meet. Earlier in the season both the girls and boys teams captured team titles in the prestigious Knights Crossing Invitational in Salem, Virginia, and the girls won second place honors at the Hare and Hounds Classic in Charlotte.
The road to the Hawks' success began with the largest ever participation in our summer training program, which set the athletes up for big performance breakthroughs during the season. Along with the teams' accomplishments, many individual honors were earned as well. All-State distinctions were earned by senior captain
Ethan Khouri, senior captain
Bridget Yu, and junior
Claire Mayberry. The Hawks placed eight athletes on the CISAA All-Conference team:
Bridget Yu,
Claire Mayberry,
Eleanor Fisher,
Maggie Klingman,
Ethan Khouri,
Erik Anglemyer,
Henry Anglemyer, and
Webb Kiser.
Astonishingly, twenty percent of the current Hawks cross country athletes now own race times placing them on Latin's All-Time Top 25 5K performance list. Girls Top 25 athletes are:
Bridget Yu (2nd);
Claire Mayberry (7th);
Eleanor Fisher (11th);
Grace Short (15th), and
Maggie Klingman (19th). Boys Top 25 athletes are:
Ethan Khouri (5th);
Erik Anglemyer (8th);
Henry Anglemyer (9th);
Webb Kiser (15th); and
Charles Guggenheimer (25th). Beyond these elite performances, more than fifty athletes participated in varsity cross country this season. Everyone contributed to a team atmosphere that was fun, challenging, and spirited. We will miss our graduating seniors, and we appreciate the legacy of excellence they have left for their younger teammates to build upon.
CROSS COUNTRY - MS
By Coach Moore
As expected, our MSXC Hawks SOARED this season! We had one of the largest middle school cross country teams ever with several athletes joining the team mid-to-late season. The enthusiasm and camaraderie were genuine, and our 2024 MSXC team definitely brought the spirit and skills. Due to injuries, weather and other scheduling conflicts, we went into the GCMSSA championship with fewer qualifying athletes and a much smaller team than our competitors. Despite the challenge of running with a reduced roster, our athletes performed very well. The Latin girls finished 4
th out of 7 teams, which was amazing considering we only ran seven athletes. Our girls left everything on the course in the final race of the season, with every athlete achieving a personal record when it mattered the most. The Latin boys team came in 3
rd place out of 8 teams, with 7 Latin boys earning a personal record during the championship race and 3 Latin boys finished in the top ten. The accomplishments of our athletes for the 2024 MSXC season can be attributed in large part to the way our athletes support and encourage each other to be their very best. As coaches, we are honored to coach these athletes and we could not be more proud of their success.
DANCE TEAM – VARSITY
Led by a quartet of seniors, the dance team brought spirit, athleticism, and grace to every performance throughout the football season.
FIELD HOCKEY – VARSITY
By Coach Prestidge
The 2024 varsity field hockey team members are as happy and close a unit as I've ever coached. They love each other and they believe in each other. We're a pretty young Varsity team, and we've had our ups and downs - but we play exciting hockey and had a huge end to the season, winning five on the bounce and beating all our conference rivals, to come into the playoffs firing on all cylinders. The season concluded with a tight semifinal at Country Day to which the scoreline does no justice.
FIELD HOCKEY – JV
By Coach Frederick
The 2024 JV Field Hockey team navigated uncharted territory by opting to create a full team with the help of our 8th grade players. Working under the motto of "Together I'll Play Better," the small core of Upper School athletes and the cadre of Middle School players gelled quickly and won their first game with a resounding 5-0 score over Covenant Day. Most of the Hawks' opponents had rosters of 9-11 grade students, so the evenness of the season's record speaks well to the willingness of our team to truly "play up" against older and more experienced JV teams. Some of the team's best moments this season came from games whose final score was 0-0: a tie against a strong and feisty Providence Day team and a tie that felt equivalent to winning the Super Bowl against Country Day. Overall, the team grew in both experience and skills, and next season already looks bright for this crew!
FIELD HOCKEY - MS
By Coach Collier
What an exciting season for our middle school field hockey team. We had a lot of energy out on the field with five players that never played before, twelve novice players and a new goalie. Our team of 7th graders were in sync with one another and earned a record of 4 wins and 3 losses. Our team was successful in learning skills, embarking on new plays and playing as ONE united team. The girls became corner aficionados, not only taking them but defending them as well. The energy of the team can still be felt when we see each other out in the school. Well done, Hawks!
FOOTBALL – VARSITY & JV
By Coach Dayton
The 2024 Varsity Football Hawks finished with a record of 8-3 and third place finish in the conference. An early signature win came against Metrolina Christian Academy after a 36-hour weather delay and needing to score 21 points in the 4th quarter. A last second field goal by
Holden Freno versus Charlotte Country Day as time expired was remembered by much of the team as their favorite moment of the season. The Hawks offense caught fire this year and were highlighted by career highs from QB
Troy Logan in passing completions (194), yards (2,385) and touchdowns (28), 618 rushing yards by senior
Carson Clutter, and receptions and receiving yards by seniors
Gavin Provencher (32, 425yd, 4 TDs) and
Hudson Shoup (46, 470yds, 8 TDs). The defense as always was dependable and supported by linebackers
Myles Gathers,
Dallas Chapman, and
Matthew Flynn. The defensive backfield led by seniors
Joe McGirt and
Titus Ivory saw much improved pass defense with 8 and 5 interceptions respectively. The biggest improvement this year came upfront with efforts led by seniors
Asher Weiers, Tim Schwindt, and juniors
Matthew Barber and
Trent Barber. They held down the trenches on both the offensive and defensive lines. The conference coaches recognized these performances naming
Troy Logan,
Hudson Shoup,
Gavin Provencher,
Trent Barber,
Dallas Chapman, and
Myles Gathers second team all-conference, while
Titus Ivory and
Matthew Barber were awarded first team honors.
The 2024 JV Football Hawks finished with a record of 4-3 and had great wins against Cannon, Covenant Day, Charlotte Country Day and Metrolina Christian Academy. This group showed a lot of promise and are looking forward to growing their roles in the program.
FOOTBALL – MS
By Coach Cooke
Our Middle School Hawks had an extremely successful season in 2024. With 47 total players including twenty-seven 8th graders, our Middle School team improved from an 0-6 record in 2023 to a 5-3 finish in 2024 including wins over rivals Providence Day and Country Day. Our offense was led by some very talented skill players in 8th graders
Karim McGregor,
Elijah Scott,
Emory Chaney,
William Alt and
Maddox Riley. The offensive line was probably the best we've had in recent memories anchored by 8th graders
Henry Siegel,
John Gray Norris,
Sam Morgan and
Mills Cutter. Defensively, we were stout, holding opponents to an average of 14 points a game including an average of 6.8 in our five wins. Our defense was led by
Gardner Kelly at Safety and
Teddy Stubbs at LB. With twenty players returning, the Hawks will look to several 7th grade starters from this year to lead next year's squad including DB/WR
Walker Sammons, QB
Pierce Giles, OL/DL
Cash Morgan, and OL/DL
Grey Heinzerling. The future looks bright with these young Hawks.
GIRLS' GOLF - VARSITY
By Coach Kelly
This season the Varsity Girls Golf team took a step forward. We qualified as a team for the NCISAA championship after having only individual qualifiers the previous two years. The Hawks finished 2nd in the conference and 3rd in the state. Junior
Kelsey Sciacca had a very strong season, winning individual medalist at the CISAA Championship and the Carmel Invitational, finishing third at NCISAAs, and earning All-State and First Team All-Conference honors. Junior
Drue Amin and eight grader
Ella Sciacca were named Second Team All-Conference. This young team has a lot of promise and a great attitude. Overall, the commitment to the golf program has increased and we are looking forward to a bright future.
BOYS' SOCCER – VARSITY
By Coach Searles
One game does not define a season, and as we look back on a special year for Charlotte Latin Soccer we have so many things to be proud of. Everyone can look at results, everyone can look at the goals, the games' winners, but what does not reflect in the box score is how much fun this team was to be around and how much they cared for each other. From the start of the year in the preseason mountain trip, to the overnight Ravenscroft tournament all the way through the playoffs, you saw a group of young men who enjoyed being together. We saw a team and a program learn how to win, and that is what this returning group will bring to next season.
BOYS' SOCCER – JV
By Coach Barthram
This was such an exciting season for many reasons. With 17 freshmen, five sophomores and one junior it had its challenges. Right from the start, the boys worked hard during practice always giving 100% learning new tactics and formations and taking it all in. When it came to game time, they were all business showing great creativity and discipline, scoring 38 goals and only conceding 6. They played the whole season without losing a single game showing great spirit and character. What a magical season!
BOYS' SOCCER – MS NAVY
By Coach Alt
Coach Alt and Coach Brunton managed another successful middle school season, but the players of the Navy team earned their own winning record (6-5-2.) This was the first year of two middle school boys' team, as the 7th and 8th graders were separated into Navy and White teams by experience level. Henry, Luke, Carsten, Lawton, Griffin, William V, Zach, Turner, Vin, Lucas, Krish and Brooks led the team as 8th graders, and we are quite interested to see their paths continue into Upper School soccer. Will R and Finley will provide the leadership for next year's team, and proved their worth many times over. Not only did Navy play a tremendous brand of soccer, but we competed with every bit of our hearts and enjoyed each other's company immensely.
BOYS' SOCCER – MS WHITE
By Coach Dottarar
The Middle School white team's goal was to maximize the time each player was able to be on the pitch and this season delivered. The white team was made up of 12 players who displayed heart and grit. Every game some players were asked to play the entire 60 minutes without break, and the boys responded. At times, players were asked to play in different positions and learn new roles. Again, they responded. Two standout games were against Metrolina Christian Academy and the last game of the year against Charlotte Country Day. Metrolina was the season's first win with Elliott Meek scoring and subsequently leading the team in exuberant celebration. The final match against Charlotte Country Day ended in a tie, but displayed moments of pure soccer bliss as the boys possessed the ball displaying the technical abilities they had practiced all season.
Collin McGirt buried the penalty kick and let the other side know the white team was here to play. We wish our two 8th graders: Elliott Meek and
Miller Ford all the best as they move forward to Upper School soccer next year, and look forward to the return of our now-seasoned seventh grade contingent.
GIRLS' TENNIS – VARSITY
By Coach Imwalle
This season, the Hawks gained valuable experience and became very close teammates over the course of the fall. The future is really bright for this team in the coming years. Many of the returning players are underclassmen who are determined to continue to improve and are eager for another opportunity to compete alongside one another. That said, the leadership from the upperclassmen this season helped lay the foundation for this group going forward. Our captains helped foster an environment that encouraged improvement on and off the court. Our leaders wanted all members of this team to feel accepted and like they truly belonged to this group. This was made possible in large part because of the efforts made by students from different grade levels to build relationships with one another.
GIRLS' TENNIS – JV
By Coach Drury
The 2024 JV girls' tennis team had many returning players, and their experience showed in an improved win/loss record over the previous season. As individuals, the Hawks continued to develop and mature as competitive players, while having fun as a group. With five juniors on the team, the sophomore and freshmen girls were able to benefit from the leadership and maturity of the more veteran players. Co-Captain
Jackie Rao, in her second year as captain, kept the outlook of the girls positive in what turned out the be a difficult competitive season. Her pre-match pep talks were always upbeat and fun.
Ananya Banerjee proved herself to be a consistent doubles player and a versatile partner winning matches with multiple teammates. New to tennis in general,
Riley Hill proved herself by winning 2 of her 4 singles outings. Third year players
Divija Rao and
Zoe Panzo both contributed to singles wins; it should be noted that Zoe won her last two matches.Sophomores
Saanvi Gaddam and
Hattie Young (co-captain) led the singles line up for most of the season and made significant improvement in the technical skills. Katheryn Wu proved herself to be a tough opponent with her stamina, consistent slice serve and her powerful forehand. Most notable about the three sophomore players was how their development of points improved. Freshmen players included
Grace Porcher,
Claire Siever,
Nora Panzo and
Radhika Dutt. Throughout the season Grace and Claire were consistently in the top 6 singles line up; Grace's game relied heavily on her foot speed and stamina, while Claire's consistent baseline play kept her close in her many matches. Nora and Radhika improved throughout the season with Nora working her way into the doubles line up and Radhika playing singles and doubles. Altogether, there as a tremendous amount of growth and development among the entire team.
GIRLS' TENNIS – MS
By Coach Cook
Challenge and opportunity were the running themes of the 2024 season. With only 3 returning players, there were quite a few unknowns this fall. The girls gutted out some good wins in tense spots and showed growth against a couple of our tougher opponents.
Maya Borkowski,
Maya Rao, and
Kylie Wilson provided good, consistent play on the court and daily leadership to foster a great team environment for all of the new players.
Sophia Roberts stepped in to take on the best from other teams. The rest of the girls all contributed throughout the season. This team was truly a great group of girls. They worked at getting better everyday on the court, and more importantly, they came together off the court making the season a ton of fun.
VOLLEYBALL – VARSITY
By Coach Peters
The varsity volleyball team built off of their successful season last year and finished this year with an 18-6 record and another top 5 finish in the NCISAA. They started their season setting their goals and had them as their priority all year, showing up day in and day out ready to work hard to continue improving. The team had a focus this season to be "Relentless" throughout all of their practices, games and preparation and it showed through their success as a team. Captain libero
Alison Archibald led the way with her strong defensive presence on the court and hit the 1,000 dig milestone early in the season. Alison led the state in digs for the second year in a row and received 1st Team All-Conference and All-State recognition. Junior captain
Allie Haynie also received 1st Team All-Conference honors and led the CISAA in kills as a 6-rotation outside hitter. Sophomore
Ava Nadeau made an impact on the court this season and was recognized as 2nd Team All-Conference. The varsity volleyball team is proud of how they represented themselves throughout the season and are ready to get back into the gym to continue improving on their success! GO HAWKS!
VOLLEYBALL – JV
By Coach Belk
The 2024 JV volleyball season was nothing short of exciting. Through dedication and hard work, the Hawks grew together as a team, demonstrating resilience and determination both on and off the court. This season, the team celebrated key victories against Cannon School, Covenant Day, and Charlotte Christian, finishing with an impressive 9-7 record. The JV Hawks showcased tenacity by achieving many of the goals set at the start of the season. Some of the season's most memorable highlights include sweeping Charlotte Christian in two sets at home in a redemption match, battling Providence Day in a thrilling three-set match—arguably one of the team's best performances as a unit—and securing victories against Cannon School both at home and away. The away match at Cannon was particularly special, with the energy and enthusiasm from the crowd creating an unforgettable atmosphere. This season was a testament to the team's growth, unity, and passion for the game. Go Hawks!
VOLLEYBALL – NAVY
By Coach Blas
Our Navy team made every moment count. Their open-mindedness to making changes and trying new roles is something that any coach would envy. Our Navy players were 100% committed to each other and had each others' backs every point. One of the most memorable team moments was a comeback from being down 22-6 to win 25-22! That alone is nearly impossible at a middle school or professional level. We are proud of them for being excellent humans on and off the court and are excited to see what they do next.
VOLLEYBALL – WHITE
By Coach Blas
The White team's 8-2 finish is remarkable. We had many players who had never played volleyball competitively, and now they can't get enough! We are proud of the discipline that this team showed in their fundamentals, which is why they were so successful! Their energy was unmatched and consistent throughout every game and practice. Their open-mindedness to growth and learning was every coach's dream. We cannot wait for this group to continue competing and growing!
