The varsity boys' cross country team took 1st place in the 2024 CISAA Championship in dramatic fashion, winning the program's first conference title in at least twenty years. Although 27 Hawks competed in the boys' race, the team score is determined by adding the place earned by the fastest five runners. Charlotte Latin's score was 47, comprised of the finishes of
Ethan Khouri (3rd),
Erik Anglemyer (5th),
Henry Anglemyer (8th),
Webb Kiser (12th), and
William Austin (19th). Providence Day School's score was also 47, comprised of finishes in 1st, 4th, 10th, 15th, and 17th. In the event of a tie, the place earned by sixth-fastest runner for each team becomes the determining factor. Providence Day's sixth runner finished 24th. Charlotte Latin's sixth runner, freshman
Jackson Kerr, finished 23rd - giving the Hawks the victory.
The varsity girls' cross country team placed second with an impressive score of 52 comprised of strong performances by
Bridget Yu (5th),
Claire Mayberry (8th),
Eleanor Fisher (9th),
Maggie Klingman (13th), and
Amelia DiRoma (21st). The girls' program has a long history of top 3 finishes, including it's most recent championship win in 2022. In all, the girls' team had eleven personal best times and the boys' team had fourteen. Eight Hawks earned All-Conference honors for placing in the top 14 of their division:
1st Team CISAA All-Conference
Ethan Khouri
Erik Anglemyer
Bridget Yu
2nd Team CISAA All-Conference
Henry Anglemyer
Webb Kiser
Claire Mayberry
Eleanor Fisher
Maggie Klingman
The middle school cross country teams were also hugely successful in the Greater Charlotte Middle School Athletic Association (GCMSAA) Invitational, which is their season's culminating event. Out of 18 athletes competing for the Hawks, 14 ran a personal best time. The boys' team finished third with 64 points, while the small-but-mighty girls' team placed fourth with only seven competitors. Seventh grade students
Madeline Douglas (12:15.46) and
Kaitlyn Kim (12:38.42) led the way for the girls' team, placing 5th and 10th respectively. Three 8th grade boys placed in the top ten:
Ethan Fosnaugh (11:01.95 - 5th),
Sam Deterding (11:13.85 - 8th), and
Jackson Ollman (11:24.94 - 9th). Congratulations on an outstanding finish to a great season, MS Hawks!
The varsity runners with the top ten times this season will represent the Hawks at next week's North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) Championship meet at WakeMed Park in Cary, NC. Seven runners will compete (three are taken as alternates in case of illness or injury), and the top five finishes will comprise the team score. Good luck, Hawks!
