Cross Country Trail

Latin is blessed to have one of the largest green spaces in Southern Mecklenburg County, our own natural preserve. The woods comprise around 8 acres of mature hardwood forest that serves as habitat for many different plant and animal species–deer, small mammals, and a wide variety of birds. Rocky Branch Creek, a tributary of Sugar Creek in the Catawba River watershed, flows through the property as well, featuring some beautiful cascades along the boundary between CLS and the Raintree neighborhood.

The property was purchased by CLS in the early 1990s. A professionally-designed trail system was added in 2007, which provides a safe and functional training ground for Latin’s cross country teams. CLS has hosted many cross country meets here involving many schools, along with 5K run/walk events for faculty, alumni, and families. Students, parents, and faculty enjoy running and walking amidst our own green sanctuary from the bustling suburban environment surrounding the campus. The woods also provide a place for science teachers to conduct outdoor classes. The Hawksquest program utilizes a challenge course with ropes, platforms, and and other physical features in which to conduct sessions on leadership and teamwork.

We are truly blessed to have our own nature preserve right in our backyard. The Latin Woods is one of the defining features of this truly lovely campus.
