2024 Season Summary
By Coach Weiss
The 2024 cross country season was one of the most successful in the history of the sport at Latin. The varsity boys captured the CISAA Championship in a tense battle with Providence Day, and followed that up with an excellent fourth place finish at the state meet. Earlier in the season the boys team captured team titles in the prestigious Knights Crossing Invitational in Salem, Virginia. The road to the Hawks’ success began with the largest ever participation in our summer training program, which set the athletes up for big performance breakthroughs during the season. Along with the teams’ accomplishments, many individual honors were earned as well. All-State distinctions were earned by senior captain Ethan Khouri. The Hawks placed four athletes on the CISAA All-Conference team: Ethan Khouri, Erik Anglemyer, Henry Anglemyer, and Webb Kiser. Astonishingly, twenty percent of the current Hawks cross country athletes now own race times placing them on Latin’s All-Time Top 25 5K performance list. Boys Top 25 athletes are: Ethan Khouri (5th); Erik Anglemyer (8th); Henry Anglemyer (9th); Webb Kiser (15th); and Charles Guggenheimer (25th). Beyond these elite performances, over fifty athletes participated in varsity cross country this season. Everyone contributed to a team atmosphere that was fun, challenging, and spirited. We will miss our graduating seniors, and we appreciate the legacy of excellence they have left for their younger teammates to build upon.
2023 Season Summary
As the 2023 cross country season comes to a close, the athletes can look back with pride on their remarkable individual and team accomplishments. Out of fifty athletes on our roster, thirty-two ran personal best 5K times this season. The average 5k time among our fastest seven girls exceeded that of last year's state championship team. The boys' team had seven athletes run sub-18:00, including three freshmen, which is a program first. Fourteen boys ran under 20:00, over half of the team, also a milestone. Success is not defined solely by race times and other statistics, however. The spirit of this year's team, the athletes' willingness to learn the sport, to make each other better, and to have fun along the way will be remembered by the coaches as the distinguishing trademark of the 2023 Latin XC team. This year's team is the youngest in program history, with only seven seniors on the combined roster of fifty. The girls' team overcame some injuries and other adversity to record an outstanding third place finish at the NCISAA Championships. Claire Mayberry (Soph.), Lucy Rattterree (Sr.), and Bridget Yu (Jr.) earned All-Conference honors, and Lucy made the All-State team. The boys' team, led by freshmen Erik Anglemyer and Charles Guggenheimer, finished eighth at the state meet and is primed for an excellent future. We are proud of the Hawks for a great season, grateful to our seniors for their hard work and leadership, and excited for a bright future ahead.Â
2022Â Season Summary
The Hawks concluded a hugely successful 2022 cross country season at the NCISAA Championships in Greensboro on October 28. Latin's girls won their second NCISAA state championship within the past three years, putting the finishing touches on a dominant season in which they won three large invitationals as well as the CISAA Conference Championship. The boys' team steadily improved throughout the season and finished sixth at the state championships, moving up from their pre-meet seeding and achieving six out of seven personal best times. With only one senior among the boys' top five runners, their upward projection is expected to continue. Both teams are filled with athletes who have a genuine passion for the sport of running. Team camaraderie is high, and the Latin cross country program is poised to thrive for many years to come.Â

2021 Season Summary
The team comprised over 60 athletes, about a third of whom are freshmen. We appreciated the leadership of our veterans, and the enthusiasm and eagerness of our younger athletes. We enjoyed competing in some fun invitationals that we had not raced in before, such as the Carolinas Kickoff Classic, the Wilmington Beach Blast, and the NCRunners Elite Invitational, along with old standbys like Hare and Hounds. When we reached Championship Season, the athletes peaked extremely well, and put down dozens of personal best times at the CISAA and NCISAA Championships. The Hawks raced well, represented their school with sportsmanship and pride, and had lots of fun along the way.
2020 Season Summary
The 2020 NCISAA Cross Country Championships were held at McAlpine Park on Saturday, October 31, with runners separated into waves and only athletes, coaches, and meet personnel permitted in the competition area. As strange as the circumstances were, it was a celebratory day for the Hawks.
The girls ran first, with all of Latin's seven representatives running in the same wave at noon. Junior Mary Schleusner set out with the lead pack and stayed there, coming in 4th in a time of 19:14.1. The rest of the Hawks did what they trained to do - run as a pack and work together - and as Coach Weiss said, "They nailed it." All seven of Latin's girls finished in the top 26, with five in the top 20, earning the Hawks their first cross country state championship since 2010.
The boys' team was split among two waves. Sophomore Emilio Llerenas-Soto and senior Charles Harris ran in the first wave, and the remaining five runners started just a few minutes behind in wave two. Emilio pushed himself to a huge personal best time of 17:31 and was the top Hawk on the day, finishing in 25th. The second wave group ran well together as a pack, led by freshman Jackson DiRoma who was 36th in his first state meet with a significant time drop to finish in 17:53. The Hawks finished 7th in the boys' competition, coming in just behind Christ School but significantly ahead of 8th place Metrolina Christian Academy.
Congratulations to all of the runners that represented Latin at the CISAA and NCISAA Championships. See times, finishes, and a few NCISAA meet photos below. Click here for full NCISAA Championship results and click here for full CISAA Championship results.
