Friday, May 5, 2023 was a special night for the Latin community, as we celebrated Coach Dick Sipperly's last regular season game and his extensive career. Coach Sipperly started coaching in 1979, and he has led the Latin boys' lacrosse program since 2004. Many of our lacrosse alumni were in attendance to celebrate his achievements and his contributions to the Latin community, which include five state championships, 4 conference championships, three North Carolina Private School Coach of the Year awards, a Hawkspy Coach of the Year award, and the Steve Howard Excellence in Coaching Award. As Athletic Director David Gatoux, senior captain
Bryce Hoben, and Latin parent and Middle School lacrosse coach Andrew Fisher all noted, Coach Sip's impact goes far beyond wins and losses. He has served as a mentor to hundreds of young athletes, and his legacy lives on in the lives of those he coached.
Mr. Gatoux also recognized Coach Sipperly's wife, Sarah, for her patience and understanding through all of the late nights and long seasons, and for the many teams at Latin that she has supported as a coach herself. The team presented Coach Sipperly with a signed waterproof backpack cooler that will serve him well as he and Sarah embark on their cross country travels next month. Congratulations and thank you, Coach Sip!
