NCISAA Champs! Girls' Soccer Reclaims the State Title

Varsity girls' soccer defeated Providence Day 2-1 in the 2023 NCISAA 4A Championship Final on May 20, 2023 to reclaim the state title it last captured in 2018. The Hawks have made it to the NCISAA semifinals or the finals for the past 18 seasons, and have faced Providence Day in seven of the past eight championship games. In this long-time rivalry, Latin now has the slight edge, with four victories to PD's three.

The Chargers won both regular season matches the teams played this year, with scores of 2-1 and 2-0, and they found the net first on a left-footed shot from Blane McElroy that slipped past CLS goalie Mayes Fisher's outstretched arm with 32 minutes remaining. It took eleven minutes for the Hawks to even the score, when Ella Smith fed the ball from midfield to Dempsey McMahon, who slipped it past the Chargers' goalie as she challenged Dempsey at the 10-yard line. The winning goal occurred with 18:44 remaining, when Lucy Dempsey crossed the ball in front of the net and the Chargers goalie deflected the pass seemingly intended for Ella Smith. Freshman Claire Zhang got to the ball before the converging defenders and slipped it into the middle of the goal between them. The teams battled on but the Hawks' defense held until time expired.

The victory is the first NCISAA Championship for Kyle Searles as the CLS head coach, in his first year as the head of both girls' and boys' Latin soccer programs. The team finished the season with a record of 18-2-1 with six players selected as All-Conference and three earning All-State honors. Senior Ella Smith was chosen as the CISAA Player of the Year for a second consecutive season. She scored 64 points for the Hawks, with 25 goals and 14 assists. Lucy Dempsey and Dempsey McMahon added 39 and 37 points, respectively, and junior Avery Cheatwood led the team in assists with 17. Senior goalkeeper Mayes Fisher was credited with 93 saves for the season. Congratulations, Hawks!
